Our 904 Proves Better Than Theirs! Local Men Awarded for Detaining Jax Fire Lieutenant After Attempted Carjacking

St. Augustine Chief of Police Barry Fox Presents awards to James Devan Durr (Middle) and Brian Velez (Right)

It seems like an odd headline, so let me explain. Just a few months ago, John Lopez, 37, a Lieutenant with Jacksonville Fire Rescue was arrested after he tried to violently carjack a woman outside of Prohibition Kitchen in St. Augustine.

Reports at the time indicated that Lopez ordered a woman out of her car in the parking lot of the restaurant. When she did not comply, he opened the door and slammed the woman on the ground, attempting to drive off in her car.

He may have been successful if two local heroes hadn't jumped in to help.

Brian Velez and James Devan Durr were each personally given awards by Police Chief Barry Fox on Wednesday for their roles in stopping, and detaining Lopez until police arrived.

A full house burst into applause as the men were honored for their bravery in the face of danger.

It's good to know we have people who are willing to step up to the plate when action is necessary. We need more good stories like this!
