CHALLENGER: With Neville Out, John Valdes Eyes Commission Seat 4

April 6, 2018

With Todd Neville announcing this week that he will not seek reelection for his City Commission seat, John Valdes is looking to take advantage of the opening.

Valdes is a local contractor, and ran against Neville in 2014. Neville squeaked out a victory with 55% of the votes in a close election. With that hurdle out of the way, Valdes thinks his experience with local government gives him the advantage in this race, now only against fellow local, Jill Pacetti.

Valdes has served as a volunteer on a variety of city boards, including about a dozen years on the Planning and Zoning Board. Valdez has also served on the Historic Architectural Review Board and Code Enforcement, Adjustments and Appeals Board. He understands the local system, and believes his strengths include cutting through political extremes and finding common sense middle ground.

“This is something I’m not taking on lightly. There are choices out there that are going to need to be made, and some of these choices will be absolutely wonderful for the city and some will be disastrous. And I’m worried that the wrong people are going to make the wrong choices,” says Valdes
