PRESS RELEASE - Members of the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit are continuing to investigate the death of a 71 year-old man, who was allegedly battered by an 84 year-old man, while both were residents of the St. Augustine Health and Rehabilitation Center.
The Sheriff’s Office originally responded to the facility on April 9th, when health care staff discovered the 84 year-old resident on top of the victim, repeatedly striking him in the head and face. Staff separated the two men and called for both fire rescue and law enforcement to respond. SJC Fire Rescue subsequently transported the victim to Orange Park Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
Due to the various medical needs of the suspect involved,
criminal charges for battery of a person over 65 years of age, were forwarded to the State Attorney’s Office for their review.
Investigators later learned that the victim had been transferred from the hospital to another facility in Jacksonville, where he was pronounced deceased on April 14th. The victim was subsequently brought to the Medical Examiner’s Office in St. Johns County, to conduct an autopsy and determine an official ruling in the death.
Earlier today, the Medical Examiner’s Office released their preliminary findings in the case and has ruled the cause of death as blunt force trauma and the manner of death, as a Homicide.
The investigation is continuing.
