Man Arrested In 'Cart-Jacking' After Stealing Golf Cart, Battering Driver

SJSO- CART-JACKED: Earlier today, NE District Deputies responded to a reported carjacking of a golf cart after the suspect battered the driver and took the cart from him.

According to the report filed by Deputy M. Merritt, she observed a male subject recklessly driving a red, gas powered golf cart through the intersection of US-1 North and Palencia Village Drive. Merritt activated the emergency lights and siren of her patrol car; however, the subject did not stop. She then observed the cart weaving back and forth on US-1 North, before making an abrupt U-turn in front of oncoming traffic and driving into a ditch. The suspect fled on foot, but was captured by deputies a short time later near an apartment complex. During the foot pursuit, the suspect attempted to create an escape by using his head to bust through a vinyl fence.

Deputies noted the suspect was uncooperative and exhibiting unusual behaviors. Shortly thereafter, deputies received the report of the suspect having battered a victim while working in the area and taking the golf cart by force. Deputies interviewed the victim who stated he had never seen the suspect before the incident began.

The suspect, identified as Andrew Thomson Burnett, 42, of Sanford, Florida, was arrested on a variety of charges ranging from Robbery, Fleeing and Eluding, Battery, two counts of Criminal Mischief and Resisting a Law Enforcement Officer. Burnett was booked into the SJC Jail.
