DEATH INVESTIGATION: Early Sunday morning, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office responded along with the Florida Highway Patrol to what was believed to be a fatal pedestrian hit and run crash, along AIA North. After an initial review of the site and the decedent, a decision was made to turn the investigation over to the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit, to further investigate the case as an undetermined death investigation.
The identity and residence location of the decedent was discovered while at the scene and investigators traveled to an outside jurisdiction to garner more information regarding background into the victim, who has been identified as, Brianna Jane Gibson, 24 of Middleburg, Florida. Detectives learned that the victim and her boyfriend had left the victim’s family home earlier that evening, and neither the victim, the victim’s vehicle or partner had been seen since.
Investigators began an aerial search of several areas and located the victim’s vehicle abandoned in an apartment complex, which was some distance away from the partner’s residence. The vehicle was seized and transported to the SJSO Forensics Unit to be processed, while detectives began searching for the victim’s boyfriend. After a short period of time, family members of the boyfriend contacted the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and stated the subject wished to turn himself in regarding an outstanding and unrelated warrant.
Major Crimes Investigators have since met with the boyfriend, who has been cooperating and provided an account of the night’s events. Detectives are continuing to seek any information regarding the whereabouts of Brianna and her vehicle since 10:00 P.M., Saturday evening until early Sunday morning. The vehicle is known to have been in Duval, St. Johns and Clay County’s during this time frame. If you have any information regarding this investigation you are asked to call the Major Crimes Unit at 824-8304. The investigation is ongoing.
