SHOOTING UPDATE: Shortly after 9:00 p.m. this past Tuesday night, officers with the St. Augustine Police Department were called to a disturbance call along Masters Drive. An SJSO Deputy, who was in the area also responded as backup for the primary responding SAPD officer. The initial information received was a reportedly intoxicated subject was attempting to leave the area in a vehicle, while others at the location were attempting to stop the action. Information was also relayed that the incident had become physical between the individual and others at the residence, prior to law enforcement arriving on scene, and the alleged suspect armed himself with a handgun, as the disturbance evolved.
Upon arriving on scene, the officer and deputy announced their presence and entered the doorway of the residence where they found the suspect holding the handgun and acting in a despondent manner. Law enforcement immediately began actions to deescalate the incident with the suspect, by attempting to have him put the firearm down. However, the subject subsequently pointed the handgun in the direction of the officers, causing both the officer and deputy to discharge their service weapons. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The decedent has been identified as Dustin James Acosta, W/M, 28, (04/1/1992), of St. Augustine. The cause and manner of death has been deemed a homicide (death caused by another), and ruled death by gunshot, by the 23rd District Medical Examiner’s Office. The officer and deputy involved in the incident have been identified as; SGT Kevin Carroll (SAPD) and Deputy Kristapher James (SJSO). This is the first officer-involved shooting event for each of the law enforcement officers. Neither of the law enforcement personnel were injured in the incident and each remain on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard procedure. The investigation is ongoing.
